  • How We Test the Best Healthy Green Teas

A lifestyle of crippling anxiety and loss of focus can be the kryptonite to anybody’s good time. But just like office chairs, planners, and sensory-friendly clothing, green tea may be a healthy, helpful addition for those seeking natural ways to combat the troublesome triplets of intrusive thoughts, plummeting productivity, and compromised mood.

According to Clinical Epidemiology and Global Health, among other scientific sources, L-Theanine, the amino acid found in green tea’s leaves, is scientifically proven to improve mood and cognition. It may also reduce stress and anxiety from panic disorders (even benefiting those experiencing OCD), linking the regular consumption of green tea to increased focus and better temperament.

For example, we love Zest Pomegranate Mojito Green Tea (available at Amazon) as a possible morning beverage for high performers.

Below you’ll find six healthy green teas intended to help tackle stress, anxiety, and a wide variety of health issues—at breakfast, post-lunch, dessert, or a time most appropriate for you. We’ve listed each of them, their additional benefits, and experiences garnered over multiple weeks of testing, to help determine which tea, or teas, may be right for you.

These are the best healthy green teas we’ve tested. Whether you aim to improve concentration, relieve anxiety, or detox your body, we’ve got a tea that suits your needs.

Disclaimer: Green tea is not recommended as a sole fix or a substitute to treat a clinical or medical diagnosis. Please talk with your physician about the potential effects of any prescribed medications or existing health conditions before consuming green tea.

This energy-focused green tea from Zest has ingredients to power all-day concentration.

Best Green Tea for Concentration and Energy
Zest Pomegranate Mojito Green Tea

For tea that provides all-day energy, concentration, and improved focus, Zest offers Zest Pomegranate Mojito Green Tea and a host of other unique flavors.

This tea is ideal for highly productive, high-performing people who need to zero in and power through morning emails or other daunting tasks. Its flavor is mint forward with hints of pomegranate, and its all-natural ingredients aid in steady, uninterrupted sessions of concentration.

In testing, this healthy green tea generated hours of sustained energy that felt rather normal and akin to zen or calm. It did not give me the jitters (which could be attributed to the quality of its ingredients). However, to that point, it’s best to note this tea features three times as much caffeine as regular teas. So, those who are sensitive to caffeine should proceed with caution.

For those who do consume caffeine, the L-Theanine present in this product is one of the tea’s best ingredients, clearing disruptive thoughts and promoting focus while preventing a crash later in the day. If you’re not a fan of mint, you may want to consider another tea from the Zest brand or another brand of tea altogether.

At a price point of around $18 per bag, this tea is a great buy. However, prepare for a small party of confetti on your countertop if you don’t have the proper strainer to catch the finest of the tea’s leaves.

Pros

  • Great focus

  • Mood booster

  • Lasting energy

Cons

  • Fine leaves leave a mess

If you need a short burst of energy, Republic of Tea has a great green tea worth trying.

Best Green Tea For Morning or Noon
The Republic of Tea – Pineapple Ginger Green Tea

A cup of Pineapple Ginger Green Tea from the Republic of Tea is truly the “paradisical escape to faraway places” its packaging describes. It is the fragrant mood booster you need before its dosage of average energy and focus, which is good for a couple of hours as opposed to all day.

Think of this Pineapple Ginger Green Tea as a tool for a sprint, not a marathon. In other words, this may be the best healthy green tea to begin the day leading up to lunch, or perhaps to have as a replacement for coffee when in need of a short burst of energy.

Those who like their tea strong and want to experience the pineapple flavor will find themselves using two bags of the product to achieve its fullest effect and fragrance. But beware, because drinking too much of this tea may leave you in a slump that’s hard to bounce back from.

This product is perfect for those wary of caffeine consumption as each serving contains around 30 mg of caffeine, which is average for green teas. To make a refreshing drink, consider having this tea on ice with a natural sweetener and a wedge of orange. So delish!

Pros

  • Great smell and taste

  • Solid energy impact

  • Light mood boost

Cons

  • Energy and focus benefits are very temporary

If you want tea that has Liquid I.V. qualities, Clevr Blends has what you seek.

Best Green Tea For Hydration
Clevr SuperTea

Clevr Blends Mango Green SuperTea is an excellent way to begin the day, especially if you seek hydration in your morning routine. It’s also a refreshing beverage for the patio or a light drink to pair with lunch. This tea’s taste is reminiscent of nectar, its notes deep with mango. It refreshes almost instantly and has hydrating effects akin to Liquid I.V., meaning it could be a great staple for night lifers who seek a much-needed boost after an event-filled, celebratory evening.

Though it does not provide a jolt of additional energy outside of what green tea promises, Clevr Blends Mango Green SuperTea’s energy boost takes effect quickly, giving you the necessary focus to knock out emails or morning tasks. It also has loads of other benefits. One of them is its addition of 1 billion probiotics, advantageous to those who may have a complicated relationship with the toilet. Several ratings on the company’s site affirm the tea’s potential to improve digestive health.

This tea comes in powdered form. So, be sure to add a tad more water than its instructions call for, otherwise it will leave a chalky aftertaste on your tongue. Once mixed properly, it is a refreshing tropical treat. It has the perfect amount of sweetness and is best enjoyed over ice.

Clevr Blends Mango Green SuperTea contains about 30 milligrams of caffeine, the average amount of caffeine for green tea. It is also not recommended for those who are pregnant, and it contains tree nuts. The tea costs $1.40 per serving.

Pros

  • Delicious natural flavor

  • Fast hydration

  • Potential digestive benefits

Cons

  • Powder form

  • Tree nuts may trigger allergies

  • Have to modify instructions

This Adagio tea has a super-delicate flavor, which makes it a great compliment to a sweet treat.

Best Sweet Green Tea
Adagio Mango Green Tea

An exceptionally light green tea with a hint of mango and a hint of leaf, Adagio Mango Green Tea is perfectly paired with a scone, muffin, coconut custard, or a ravishing slice of pineapple pound cake.

The thing about Adagio Mango Green Tea is that its flavor is so delicate that it should not be enjoyed alone. It’s light enough to not conflict with or disturb the goodness of any sweet treat. Those who enjoy tea on its own may be a bit disappointed with the noticeably soft notes of Adagio Mango Green Tea, since it is exceptionally faint.

However, those looking for a healthy green tea with lighter caffeine content may enjoy this one. Its packaging promotes lighter caffeine, which seems to be true in comparison to the physical reaction experienced after consuming other teas. However, neither the packaging nor the company’s website provide the specific amount of caffeine present. Its high price point may also be a deterrent to those shopping for a bargain.

Pros

  • Pairs well with dessert

Cons

  • Is extremely light and delicate

This tea has a bitter taste, but it has big potential for reducing inflammation.

Best Green Tea For Detox
Moksha Soursop Green Tea and Lemon

Moksha Soursop Green Tea and Lemon is the most bitter of the healthy green teas we tested. Those who like tropical and pleasant notes will not appreciate this one. This tea’s lemon and soursop flavor is not for the sweet seeking. However, the additional claims of soursop and lemon account for its tartness. Soursop, according to the National Library of Medicine, is a plant that detoxes the body’s most important organs—the kidneys, liver, and heart—and is also said to reduce inflammation for those suffering from arthritis, asthma, acne, and other similar conditions.

Moksha Soursop Green Tea and Lemon would benefit from a sweetener. Its long-term benefits are yet to be determined despite positive buzz. If you are looking for a two-for-one impact, a detox in addition to increased mood and focus, this reasonably priced tea may be for you.

Pros

  • Great for detox

  • Competitive price

Cons

  • Bitter taste

This tea's aroma is as strong as its skin-restorative properties.

Best Green Tea For Skin
English Tea Store Organic Sencha Tea

The aroma is perfume-like, but its taste is strictly green. English Tea Store Cherry Rose Festival Green Tea is a mood and energy booster with an average effect on focus.

English Tea Store Cherry Rose Festival Green Tea arrives in a conspicuous, brown, zip-sealed package with very little information presented on either side. Opening the package is like spraying a fresh bottle of women’s fragrance. The floral notes of the blossoms and green tea leaves make this one of the strongest teas we tested. It is certainly a grab for those who like botanical flavor.

The flavor may be divisive, but, if you’d like the possibility of increased cardiovascular health, decreased insomnia, increased skin health, and restored pH as added benefits, this might be the best healthy green tea for you. According to studies featured in Cytotechnology, cherry blossoms are loaded with antioxidants that help fight oxidative stress and decrease signs of aging.

This tea increases energy and focus slightly more than average, but how much caffeine it contains, and whether it increases mood, is yet to be determined. Note that this is a looseleaf tea. The leaves are larger, though, so they don’t leave a mess. This $11 bag of strong tea provides 4 ounces of goodness.

Pros

  • Delicious floral notes

  • Coarsely cut leaves

Cons

  • Uninformative packaging

  • Faint rose blossom flavor may be unappealing

What You Should Know About Green Tea

Closeup photo of green tea leaves sitting on a paper towel
Credit: Reviewed / K.E. Lewis

Green tea has a small amount of caffeine, though many of its core nutrients get boiled.

Does Green Tea Have Caffeine? How much?

Yes, though the dosage is fairly small. It has around 29 mg of caffeine, which pales in comparison to the 95 mg found in an average cup of coffee. However, labeling on your individual tea often offers more precise information.

Excessive amounts of caffeine are not recommended for adolescents, young adults, people with heart disorders, or those who are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding. High caffeine intake can, in some cases, induce anxiety, disturb sleep patterns, increase headaches, and cause other unpleasant side effects.

Does Green Tea Interact with Medications?

Yes. Green tea is not a substitute for any medications treating anxiety or panic disorders. Green tea has had adverse interactions with some blood pressure and cholesterol medications. Please consult a physician if you are taking any medication to determine if it has any adverse properties when consumed with green tea.

Is Green Tea Fattening, or Does it Assist in Weight Loss?

Many studies suggest that, when consumed regularly, green tea can help facilitate modest weight loss. Of course, just drinking green tea every day isn’t going to magically shed pounds, but it may help if you’ve already got a good diet in place.

What Nutrients are in Green Tea?

Because you boil green tea, a lot of the natural vitamins and minerals that would otherwise be part of its formula are heavily diluted. Though, studies like this one from the International Journal of Molecular Sciences highlight green tea for its inclusion of catechins, which may be helpful for treating inflammatory or cancerous conditions.

Some green teas come with added nutrients and supplements. Be sure to check those ingredients, consider your allergens, and steer clear of modified nutrients and chemicals.

How We Test the Best Healthy Green Teas

Credit: Reviewed / K.E. Lewis

Each heathy green tea was tested over a number of weeks by our expert tester.

While we lean on established science and studies to show the potential health benefits of these healthy green teas, we personally test each featured tea over the course of several weeks. Each tea is then scored based on instruction quality, brew results, taste, aroma, and general health impact. Notes are also taken to gauge any changes in the tester’s mood during the process.

If any specific health claims are made, the teas are graded based on the clarity of those assertions. The teas are then listed and ranked based on these factors. The results shown above are a reflection of these tests.
