Matthew S. Smith is a veteran technology journalist and general-purpose PC hardware nerd. His experience reporting on computers and technology kicked off with seven years of freelance work for numerous publications including PC Mag, TechHive, MacWorld, Consumer’s Digest, and MakeUseOf, among others. He spent six years guiding computer hardware and reviews coverage at Digital Trends before returning to the freelance world in 2020.

His expertise bridges the gap between consumer technology and leading-edge trends. In addition to his recent work for Reviewed, he reports on consumer technology for PC World and covers artificial intelligence for IEEE Spectrum, the magazine of the Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers.

An avid retro gamer, Matthew films video game documentaries for his YouTube channel, Computer Gaming Yesterday. He also appeared on the Digital Trends YouTube channel and hosted the publication’s computer gaming podcast, Close to the Metal. In his downtime, Matthew is a gardening enthusiast fond of hot peppers and massive heirloom tomatoes.
